I asked him where he got it from and he told me. I found the vendor who had a little stand on the street at which he sold his hats. We struck up a conversation and eventually decided to work together. As I spent time with him, I found out that even though he sells his hats from a small little corner on the street, he has a passionate and dedicated clientale. The singer Rapahel Saadiq from Tony Toni Tone bought 20 hats at once, Tom Brokaw owns one, a hat is featured in a Ford tv commercial running now, and the director Forrest Whitaker owns several. They are handmade (the stitching is so intricate and tight,professional knitters I've shown them to swear they're machine made before realizing their error)cotton hats and alpaca and chulpa (a particularly toasty blend of wool and alpaca)winter hats. We aim to dissociate violence from hype and glamour. To go deeper, to penetrate to the invisible foundation which makes it prevail, to search for its subsurface structure. To look at the everyday violence in the way we organise our existence, in the way we produce and consume, and the cultural apparatus which envelopes it all.
In its forthcoming launch issue, Themepark magazine will explore contemporary ideas, perceptions and interpretations of 'violence' as a wider phenomenon without resting on the obvious definition of the term.
Through its format, 'themepark violence' will become a book/magazine hybrid document
launching a fresh attack on the established perceptions of violence.
